The Hillsborough Concours began over forty years ago as a small antique car show organized to support the public schools of Hillsborough. Over the years, Proposition 13, the state Serrano Decision and a loss of state funds made private fundraising critical in order to maintain quality public education. As a result, Concours evolved into a series of events, all of which raise money that has become a crucial part of the public school budget. All funds raised from Concours events and programs are distributed to the parents' groups on a per-pupil enrollment basis. The individual parents' groups then decide how the money will be allocated at their school.

It is the purpose of the Hillsborough Concours to provide a unifying activity for the school community and the community at large, and to raise money for the Hillsborough public schools by having a car show and carnival, along with a series of events each year. It is the goal of the Car Show to draw a prestigious concours of automobiles. It is the goal of the carnival to provide food for sale and provide activities for people of all ages.

All Concours events and programs are completely organized and run by volunteers. Over the year, this dedicated group of volunteers contributed millions of dollar to the Hillsborough public schools.
