1957 JAGUAR XKSS REPLICA BY RAM In 1957, the Jaguar factory converted the remaining racing D-Types under construction to road-going form, e.g., by adding a full-width windscreen. The reason was that by 1957 the D-Type, successfully raced in in 55 and 56, was no longer competitive with more modern sports-racers like the Ferrari 250 Testarossa. However, there was a fire at the factory which destroyed the production line and only sixteen of these XKSS models survived. Jaguar has recently announced that they will build a very limited run of continuation XKSS cars faithfully based on the original specs to replace the cars that were lost in the fire. These new XKSS cars will sell for over one million pounds each. This particular car is a tribute to one of the most famous sports cars of of all time, the British Racing Green XKSS owned by by film star Steve McQueen. It was built in the early 90s in England by RAM Engineering, which has recently been resurrected as Realm Engineering. The engine and drive train is from a 1964 E-Type and thus the car is titled as a 1964 Jaguar. The frame is a Reynard racing chassis and the disc brakes are from an early 90s XJ Jaguar sedan, and thus far superior to those on the original 1957 XKSS cars. The current owner acquired the car at the 2004 RM Classic Car Auction in Monterey, California. He had just sold his original 1955 D-Type (XKD 528) that he owned for over twenty years at the same auction and he bought the RAM XKSS as a consolation gift to himself for parting with his D. One of the first things he did was fit the extra set of original Dunlop 16-inch peg-drive wheels that he retained from his D-Type to the XKSS, which required replacing the cars lug-nut wheel hubs with new peg-drive hubs based on the original 1955 design. Over the years, the car has been subject to many improvements such as converting the charging system from generator to alternator, which housed in the original Lucas generator case.
