"It all comes together for 2005 in the C55 AMG, which combines an updated, upgraded C-Class platform and interior with a burbling, handbuilt, 362-horse V-8. It's a torquester, too, with a 376-pound-feet peak at 4000 rpm, nearly 300 of it on hand by just 2000 revs.

The high-speed stability exhibited by all AMG-tuned Mercedes is impressive; this car tracks straight as a string at triple-digit velocities. The steering is overly heavy at low speeds but diamond-cutter accurate. Disconcertingly, during test-track maneuvers, the electronic brake assist kept the ABS functioning after the pedal was released. So all of the C55's technical, safety, and feature advances--plus two cylinders and 86 more horsepower"
